Shadows surround me - but I wasn’t on my own

(Psalm 51 51:5) - “Surely I was sinful at birth…” Humanity begins in a fallen condition.
You opened my eyes - my spirit’s first breath
(John 3:3-6) - “Born again… born of the Spirit.” Spiritual rebirth, not just awareness.
Dark all around, life full of regret
(Psalm 40 40:12) - “My iniquities have overtaken me… they are more than the hairs of my head.” Sin and personal failure surrounding and overwhelming the soul.
Can’t hit bottom - It’s as low as it gets
(Ephesians 2:1) - “Dead in trespasses and sins.” Spiritual death is the lowest possible state.
Step by step on ground that won’t hold
(Psalm 40 40:2) - “He lifted me out of the miry clay…” Unstable footing before God establishes stability.
Stones slippery like sins of old
(Psalm 73 73:2) - “My feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped.” Sin creates instability and causes stumbling.
Light runs thin, can’t see the stars
(Proverbs 4:19) - “The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.” Darkness obscures direction and causes loss of footing.
Every thorn leaves a remindin’ scar
(Proverbs 13:15) - “The way of the transgressor is hard.” Sinful paths leave lasting pain and consequence.

(Psalm 142 142:4-5) - “There is no escape for me… I cry to You, Lord.” Desperation and searching for deliverance while trapped and overwhelmed.
Didn’t know You led me through
(Isaiah 43:2) - “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” God leads through hardship, not around it.

(Luke 9:62) - “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back…” Commitment to continue forward.

(1 Peter 5:8) - “Your adversary the devil prowls around… seeking someone to devour.” Spiritual opposition seeking to kill and destroy.
You held me in the dark - taught me somethin’ new
(Psalm 139 139:11-12) - “Even the darkness is not dark to You…” (Psalm 119 119:71) - “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn…” God remains present in darkness and uses affliction to teach.
No map no compass - just a path to You
(Proverbs 3:5-6) - “Lean not on your own understanding…” Trusting God’s direction over self-guidance.
It ain’t a race - just holdin’ ground
(Ephesians 6:13) - “Having done all, to stand.” Faithfulness and endurance over speed.
Slippin’ on stones where sin abounds
(Psalm 38 38:16-17) - “When my foot slips… I am ready to fall.” Sin weakens footing and leads toward collapse.
Walkin’ the valley - step by step
(Psalm 37 37:23) - “The steps of a man are established by the Lord.” God ordering and sustaining each step.
That hole in Your side - marks a promise kept
(John 20:27) - “Put your hand into My side.”
(Isaiah 53:5) - “He was pierced for our transgressions.” Christ’s wounds are physical proof of fulfilled redemption.

Caves in the dark off the side of the road / Look like shelter when each night gets cold
(Proverbs 14:12) - “There is a way that seems right… but its end is death.” False refuge appearing safe and comforting.
Step inside just to catch my breath / But they go down deeper - to certain death
(James 1:14-15) - Desire conceives sin, and sin leads to death. Temptation gradually pulls deeper into destruction.
Black walls closin’, light grows dim
(Proverbs 2:13-14) - “Who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways…” Choosing darkness and wandering from God’s path leads into spiritual blindness and confinement.
They distract my mind - feeding my whim
(James 1:14) - “Each person is tempted when they are lured and enticed…” Temptation distracts and feeds sinful desire.
Your path stays narrow but the caves open wide
(Matthew 7:13-14) - “Wide is the gate… narrow is the way…” God’s path is disciplined while destruction invites broadly.
Thoughts run wild - teasing my pride
(James 1:14; Proverbs 16:18) - Temptation and unchecked desire feed pride, leading the mind toward destruction.

Thought I found a place to rest
(Proverbs 7:27) - “Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.” Sinful refuge appears comforting and inviting but ultimately leads into destruction.
Didn’t know it led to death
(Proverbs 14:12) - “Its end is the way to death.” Sinful refuge ultimately destroys.

Buried alive in the choices I made
(Romans 6:23) - “The wages of sin is death.” Personal choices leading toward destruction.
No way out, no light ahead
(Lamentations 3:2) - “He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light.” Hopelessness and inability to save oneself.
Rescued only by the One who bled
(Ephesians 1:7) - “In Him we have redemption through His blood…” Christ’s blood alone accomplishes redemption.
Now my eyes are open - I can see
(Ephesians 1:18) - “The eyes of your heart enlightened…” Spiritual sight restored.
But I ain’t ready for what’s in front of me
(Mark 9:24) - “I believe; help my unbelief!” Faith exists, but maturity and confidence are still developing.
Step by step on stones that slide
(Psalm 73 73:2) - “My steps had nearly slipped.” Continuing instability while learning to walk faithfully.
Still lookin’ twice at the hole in Your side
(John 20:25-29) - Thomas examining Christ’s wounds. Faith growing through visible proof of Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection.

Walkin’ the valley - I’m still here
(Galatians 5:25) - “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Daily ongoing walk and alignment with God.
Still got questions, but I won’t fear
(Psalm 23 23:4) - “I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” Fearlessness rooted in God’s presence, not certainty.
No map no compass - but I know it’s You
(John 10:27) - “My sheep hear My voice…” Recognition of God’s leading despite uncertainty.

(Isaiah 30:21) - “This is the way, walk in it.” Continued obedience to God’s direction.

(Luke 22:19) - “Do this in remembrance of Me.” Continual remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice.
